In Memoriam

During the past few months, we have lost three long-time StLGS members who were active volunteers for the society. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families.

Carolyn Altman, who died on 5 January 2021, was a member of the Jewish Genealogical Society of St. Louis (JGS) and helped to preserve records from synagogues and Jewish cemeteries. After the former JGS was dissolved, Carolyn continued to work for StLGS as a volunteer at several of our special events and to participate in many of our society meetings, in spite of failing health.

Norman Kling, who died on 3 January 2021, was also a member of the former JGS, who, although he left St. Louis and moved east to be with family, continued to write and contribute articles that were published in our newsletter, News 'n Notes. His willingness to share his knowledge through his writing undoubtedly helped many others with their own research.

Michael "Mike" McDermott, who died on 21 December 2020, worked in the StLGS office for many years as a volunteer, assisting researchers in our reference room and contributing to the success of many projects. Like Norm, Mike was a writer, and he was especially fond of sharing stories of his German ancestors. He left us a legacy of Quarterly articles on St. Louis cemeteries, churches, and cultural institutions, for which we are very grateful.
