This event is designed as a fast-paced, hands-on learning experience. To keep things running smoothly and ensure that everyone gets the most out of the day, we ask participants to come with a few basic tech skills and some preparation under their belts.
Here’s how to know if you’re ready:
Basic Tech Skills You Should Have:
- You know how to copy and paste text
- You're comfortable switching between apps or browser tabs
- You can find your family documents and photos on your computer and upload them to a website
- You can log into email and genealogy websites on a laptop away from home
What to Bring:
- A fully charged WiFi-enabled laptop (no tablets or smartphones, please)
- Your power cord, just in case
- A desktop folder on your laptop with a few digitized photos and documents, in either PDF or graphic image formats, relevant to your family history; please no paper copies!
- An electronic copy of your family tree, either online or in software
- A ChatGPT Plus account ($20/month) and the ability to log in. Bring your password! (Please note: Because of the usage restrictions on a free ChatGPT account, we strongly encourage you to subscribe for a month so you can use the website all day. More information will be provided to registrants.)
AI Experience:
- You’ve watched or attended at least one AI webinar or presentation (You can watch Jim's February 2025 presentation on our website.)
- You’ve spent at least 1–2 hours trying ChatGPT or another AI tool
This isn’t an intro-to-computers class—but it is perfect for genealogists who are ready to explore what AI can do for their research. If you’re unsure whether this is a good fit, we’re happy to help guide you to the right resources.
