StLGS September Genealogy Meetings and Events

As we continue to bring you our meetings and classes in an online format, we are delighted to hear that so many of you have been enjoying the experience. It's been a difficult time for everyone, which makes us even more excited that we can offer you an ongoing program of lectures and classes that are interesting, appeal to all skill levels, and viewable no matter where you live. In addition, registration for our virtual Fall Speaker Series is underway and we hope that you will be able to join us for this four-part series of lectures from the comfort and safety of your home. Read on for all the details.

Please join us for the following September 2020 family history events:

StLGS September Monthly Meeting (free and open to all)

  • Saturday, 12 September at 10:00 a.m. (Central): "Exploring 1875 St. Louis," featuring Missouri Historical Society historian, Andrew Wanko. (Information about this talk is now on our website.)
    • REGISTRATION is by email only. If you would like to attend the meeting, you will need to pre-register by emailing the vice-president of programs at programs@stlgs.org. You will receive an email invitation a few days before the meeting. 
    • IMPORTANT: This meeting will be livestreamed ONLY and will NOT be recorded.
    • Also, PLEASE NOTE: Only the first 100 people who join the webinar can be admitted because of limitations on the host's website, so you may want to sign in a few minutes early.

StLGS German Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting (free and open to all)

  • Wednesday, 16 September at 7:00 p.m. (Central): "It's All 'Dutch' to Me: A Crash-Course in the Sounds of German," featuring author and lecturer, Dr. J. D. Smith. (Information about this talk is now on our website.)
    • REGISTRATION: If you are already a member of the German SIG and on the mailing list, you will automatically receive an invitation to the livestream webinar a few days before the event. If you are not on the mailing list and would like to attend this meeting, email the German SIG leader at germansig@stlgs.org.
    • PLEASE NOTE: Only the first 100 people who join the webinar can be admitted because of limitations on the host's website, so you may want to sign in a few minutes early.
    • This meeting will be livestreamed and recorded. Once the recording is posted on our website, it will remain there for ninety days. No registration will be needed to view the recording after it is posted.

StLGS Class (free to StLGS members only)

  • Saturday, 26 September at 1:00 p.m. (Central):  "Foundations of Genealogy, Part I," featuring StLGS Publications Director, Ilene Murray. (Part II will be on Saturday, 3 October.) (Information about these classes is now on our website.)

As previously announced via our blog, Facebook, and Twitter, our Fall Speaker Series will be online. 

"Often Overlooked St. Louis Resources" 

Featuring author and StLGS treasurer, Viki Fagyal; curator of the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library, Nicholas Fry; manager of the History & Genealogy Dept. at St. Louis County Library Headquarters, Scott Holl; and volunteers and staff at Bellefontaine Cemetery: Becky DiFilippo, Dan Fuller, Dorris Keeven-Franke, and Michelle Thomas. 

Presentations include: 

  • Orphanage Care in St. Louis 
  • The Railroads of St. Louis
  • Discover Your Family's History in the St. Louis County Library History & Genealogy Department 
  • Cemetery Use for Genealogical Purposes
