StLGS August Meetings and More!

Most of us are sweltering this summer, but doesn't that make the idea of attending a genealogy meeting in a cool, air-conditioned location that much more appealing?  Now that the St. Louis County Library Headquarters building is closed, we have been working with our friends at the library to reserve large, comfortable meeting locations at several of the branch libraries for the remaining months of this year and all of 2023. Because our membership is so widespread, we have decided to use several venues throughout St. Louis County plus our office for our hybrid meetings, so we can accommodate everyone, regardless of where you live. You will not have to reserve space if you are attending in person, but do pay attention to meeting locations from now on. We will have Google map links to each branch library on our website as meetings open for registration. We have several interesting meetings coming up in August that should fill the bill for staying cool and learning at the same time, so check these out!

August StLGS Hybrid Monthly Meeting

Saturday, 13 August 2022

"If These Walls Could Talk" presented by Dennis Northcott, assistant archivist at the Missouri Historical Society's Library and Research Center; 10:00 a.m. (Central); free and open to all.

In-person meeting will be held at the Grant's View branch of the St. Louis County Library, 9700 Musick Road, St. Louis, MO 63123.

The Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center has a wealth of resources to help you learn about the history of your house and its former inhabitants. See examples of them and learn how they can help you research the history of the place you call home.

NOTE: This meeting will NOT be recorded.

If you plan to attend this meeting via Zoom, you must register. More details and instructions are on the StLGS website.

August StLGS SIG Meeting (via Zoom)

StLGS Jewish Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting: Sunday, 21 August 2022

"Spelling Doesn't Count: Tips for Tracking Those Ever-Changing Names," presented by StLGS publications director and co-leader of the Jewish SIG, Ilene Murray; 1:00 p.m. (Central)

Multiple alphabets and inconsistent pronunciations add to the hand-wringing we experience as we try to work out what the "real" spelling of our names and villages could be. Whether your ancestors spoke Yiddish, Russian, Polish, German, or some other first language, knowing how immigrants' names were often misinterpreted and/or changed and how to search more effectively for them will help you find them in U.S. records.

Special Interest Group meetings are free and open to all, but registration for Zoom is required. More details and instructions for registering are on the Jewish SIG page on the StLGS website.

Upcoming StLGS Hybrid Classes

Classes for StLGS members are now hybrid. You may attend in-person at our office in Maplewood or via Zoom.

The next scheduled class, "Finding Grandma: Researching the Women in Your Family," presented by StLGS librarian, Judy Belford, will be on Saturday, 27 August 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the StLGS office or by Zoom.

Check out the website to register for this and upcoming classes. Classes are currently only open to StLGS members, so why not join StLGS to get free access to our live and recorded classes!

New StLGS Youth Membership Category

Do you know a young person interested in genealogy? The future of our society as well as other genealogy and history-based groups is with the next generation, and now, as we all are facing rising prices and the need to budget more carefully, we are introducing a reduced-rate youth membership category for those under the age of twenty-five. So if you have a teenager or young adult in your life with an interest in genealogy, there has never been a better time to join StLGS. For just $25.00 per year, we welcome young people to become members, take classes, watch recorded classes and meetings, and learn from our talented lecturers and teachers. More information and a link to our secure online store is on the Membership page on our website.
