Looking for Genealogy Book Bargains? We've Got You Covered!

St. Louis Genealogical Society has operated a Trading Post of gently used genealogy books for many years. However, having the society office closed during COVID and because of many generous donations during the past two years but few opportunities to interact with the public, we have built up an almost overwhelming number of used books, and they are priced to sell! The Trading Post is open to anyone coming into our office on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday mornings and is located in the front lobby to the left of the new books for sale. (And, of course, if you live too far to visit, we can ship to you—although we will have to add postage to your order).

If you are looking for books from a specific state or country or a how-to book, we might have it. Our United States books start with Family Maps of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and go to Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer with most states in between. We also currently have books representing Canada, Cuba, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Are you writing a book or article and want help with that? We have books on writing your family history and publishing. Interested in the Civil War, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Gold Rush in California? We have books on all of these topics. Do you need help with methodology? Can you use ideas for how to find records in a specific location? We have books to help with these also. If you have St. Louis ancestry, you will want to read James Neal Primm’s, Lion of the Valley. We have two copies: one hardcover for $5.00 and a softcover for $3.00.

When D. Joshua Taylor spoke at our Fall Speaker Series, he showed a slide of the must-have books for genealogy he keeps within reach on his desk. We have several of these books, some of which are out of print, in the Trading Post:

  • Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives, $3.00
  • Printed Sources: A Guide to Published Genealogical Records, Kory Meyerink, $4.00
  • Producing a Quality Family History, Patricia Law Hatcher, $2.00
  • Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians, Elizabeth Shown Mills, editor, $5.00
  • Redbook: American State, County & Town Sources, Revised Edition, $3.00
  • State Census Records, Ann S. Lainhart, $3.00
  • The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors & Publishers, 14th Edition, $3.00
  • The Library of Congress: A Guide to Genealogical and Historical Research, James C. Neagles, $3.00
  • The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy, 3rd Edition, Val Greenwood, $3.00
  • The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, 3rd Edition, Loretto Dennis Szucs, and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking, editors, $3.00 and $5.00
You can see from the above photos that we have a great collection of gently used books on hand,
just waiting for you to make your own! (Photos by Ilene Murray; used with permission)

Come into the office and browse the books to see what you can find to help you with your genealogy.  Contact sales@stlgs.org to ask about a particular book you are looking for or to buy one of our treasures. We can ship books to you as long as you agree to pay for postage, and our sales manager will handle that when you contact her. Hurry though––first come, first served!

(Thanks to StLGS volunteer, Viki Fagyal, for writing the first part of StLGS News Flash this week!)

Congratulations to Our Newly Elected Officers

Thanks to those of you who took a few minutes to vote in our election of officers for 2023. All the nominees are returning to their positions for another two years. Karen Goode will continue as president; Jim Yochim will continue as vice-president of membership, and Cindy Finnegan will carry on as secretary. All the candidates appreciate your votes of confidence and look forward to another two years of serving the members of St. Louis Genealogical Society in their respective roles.
