David Rencher, Irish Research Specialist, to Speak at October Irish SIG Meeting!

For anyone doing Irish research, knowing where to look and what is available, especially in Europe, can be confusing. What records are there? Where are they located? How does a researcher access them? The October meeting of the StLGS Irish Special Interest Group (SIG) will feature all the answers to these questions presented by one of the foremost authorities in the U.S. on Irish research, David Rencher. Best of all, this meeting will be open to everyone and will be absolutely free! Read on for all the details.

First, we should announce that Carol Hemmersmeier, leader of the Irish SIG, has had to resign her post due to health reasons. Carol was to present the October meeting, but she is unable to do so. We asked our friend David Rencher if he could help us out, and he very generously said he would be happy to present the meeting. David will be in Boston on that date, but he will appear via Zoom so the meeting can continue to be hybrid, as first planned. Attending in-person at our office is encouraged so discussion will be possible among all participants. If you cannot attend either the livestreaming or in-person, David is letting us record the meeting, which will be available for three months on the Irish SIG page of our website.

The Specifics . . .

Saturday, 26 October 2024, 1:00 p.m. (Central time)

Hybrid meeting: In-person at the StLGS office or via Zoom

The National Archives of England and Ireland

There are three major national archives with materials relevant to family history and genealogical research in Ireland: the National Archives in London, the National Archives of Ireland in Dublin, and the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland in Belfast. Understanding their records, content, coverage, and catalogues will be the focus of this presentation.

Featured Speaker: David Rencher, AG, CG, FUGA, FIGRS, FNGS

David Rencher is the chief genealogical officer at FamilySearch, president of the National Genealogical Society, and a specialist in Irish research. He is one of the rare few who have earned credentials as both an Accredited Genealogist (AG) with ICAPGen in Ireland research and Certified Genealogist (CG) with the Board for Certification of Genealogists. He is a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (FUGA), the Irish Genealogical Research Society in London (FIGRS), and the National Genealogical Society (FNGS).

We will be digitally recording this session for those who cannot attend or those who just want to watch it again. Look for it on the Irish SIG page by Monday, 28 October 2024.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, 26 October 2024 for this exciting meeting!
