StLGS Co-Presidents Say Thanks and Call for Help!

Our post this week is a message from StLGS co-presidents, Kathy Franke and Jeani Ward.

On Thursday, 18 September 2025, the society hosted a luncheon to thank our volunteers. Volunteer Coordinator Marilyn Brennan and her team of assistants shopped, decorated, served, and cleaned everything up afterwards so forty hungry people could enjoy a delicious lunch. The event was well-attended, and we all enjoyed a chance to get to know one another better. Our volunteers keep our organization, including the office and the website, up-to-date and running smoothly. We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for their efforts, especially to the volunteers who come into the office on a regular basis.

We call them "our Regulars." They show up on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, on whatever schedule works for them, and what visitors don't see is how many more hours quite a few of them work at home or on "off" days, completing projects that don't get done when the office is busy.

Heartfelt thanks go to:

(If we left anyone out, we apologize; please let us know so we can include you!)

We also have many volunteers who work from home on indexing, writing, editing and proofreading, and we definitely don’t want to forget them. They are just too numerous to list all of them by name here.

Finally, we want to extend our gratitude to those StLGS members who attended our recent AI workshop and made it such a great success; to workshop leader Jim Ross, who clearly spent an abundance of time on preparation and made it easy for people to participate and understand this fascinating topic; and to Donna Foelsch and the Programs Committee for organizing the day and providing assistance to all the participants as they worked on Jim's many examples or used their own.

Volunteers Needed

St. Louis Genealogical Society is an all-volunteer organization. That means we need our members to help us keep our organization running. We have no paid staff. Volunteers manage the daily operations of our society as well as the administrative tasks.

We have elections for board positions annually, and every year it is a struggle to find people who are willing to fill those two-year terms. Elected positions include membership on our board of directors. The board meets monthly, and we like to have board members in the office when we are open as well as attending our monthly meetings and other functions. We realize it's a commitment, but it's also a wonderful way to learn more, keep all those skills you have acquired over the years sharpened, and meet a great group of people.

Currently, we are in desperate need of someone with financial expertise to fill the treasurer position. We'd love to talk with you, if you might be interested.

Other volunteer needs include:

  • Speakers for meetings
  • Instructors to teach classes
  • Individuals to scan documents and complete data entry
  • A Quarterly co-editor to assist with layout four times a year

During the past few years, some of our long-time volunteers have moved on to other pursuits. Our society cannot continue to be strong without new volunteers to help run the organization. Can you step up to help? We are happy to answer questions about what is involved in any position.

Contact us at the office at 314-647-8547 or send an email to president@stlgs.org.
